Hi from Tom Warburton

December 18, 2013

I’m Tom Warburton, Newcastle City Council’s new Director of Investment and Development. I’m delighted to be back in Newcastle which feels very much like coming home because it’s a city and a region I know so well having spent 20 years working in the North East, including 10 years at Regional Development Agency.

I’m looking forward to reacquainting myself with some familiar faces and meeting new people at a very exciting time for the city which has a City Deal in place, a Local Plan coming to fruition, millions of pounds worth of development under way and an ambitious Working City agenda.

Some people will be aware that while at the RDA I led the team working on planning, housing, transport and also managed the capital programme. In the last few years I’ve been at the Homes and Communities Agency, delivering housing and commercial property projects in Lancashire and Cumbria. This has included working with councils and developers to deliver housing projects; town centre regeneration and commercial schemes in some tricky markets like Burnley, Blackburn, Blackpool and the West Coast of Cumbria.

The council leader and the chief executive are determined to make Newcastle the most ambitious and business-friendly city in the UK. And with the economy and the business community gradually moving from survival to recovery, it is important that we work even closer with businesses so that they can exploit the new opportunities which will come along.

We want to show that we are open for business and doing all we can to create the best conditions for new jobs and investment. The council has a pivotal role to play, whether it is by directly financing infrastructure, using our unique borrowing powers to accelerate development or using our resources to support private and public partners in driving forward development.

I’m looking forward to meeting businesses across the city to understand your needs and how the City Council could assist you thrive, expand and drive investment into the city.
